Labor Day

LABOR DAY

you sit fat and cool
in your palace of plans
no room for the workingman
except as cogs
in the machine that feeds you
over feeds you
you’re over stuffed
a ratty old armchair
or a gluttonous turkey
beware thanksgiving approaches

Laborers unite to make A change
risk life and livelihood
so that those far aBove might see
the basic needs Of the small beneath them
in rising miseRy
12 hour sweat streaming
eyes set Deep from a lack of sleep
back aching anguish
without much slAck
barely feeding Young mouths at home
a constant gnawing
in the gut
in the belly
needing to be filled
with meaning, appreciation
civility
fill the hollowness with strikes and screams

I AM NOT JUST A COG
IN YOUR MACHINARY
I AM A HUMAN
A BEING
WITH WANTS AND DREAMS
THE LEAST OF WHICH
FOR MY CHILDREN
TO NOT KNOW HUNGER

fair work, fair wage, fairly simple
